Law Enforcement and Security at WashU Medicine

WashU Medicine Protective Services is a combination of armed response officers, unarmed communications officers, and unarmed public safety officers who provide security coverage for campus on a seven-day per week, 24-hour basis. These officers are University employees. Additionally, an unarmed contract security contingent staffs certain fixed posts on campus. Impartial Policing Policy

The purpose of the policy is to reaffirm WashU Medicine Protective Services’ commitment to unbiased policing in all its encounters between officers and any person; to reinforce procedures that serve to ensure public confidence and mutual trust through the provision of services in a fair and equitable fashion; and to protect our officers from unwarranted accusations of misconduct when they act within the dictates of departmental policy and the law.

It is the policy of Protective Services to patrol the campus in a proactive manner and to investigate suspected violations of law/university policy violations. Officers shall actively enforce federal, state, and local laws, in addition to university policy violations, in a responsible and professional manner without regard to race, ethnicity, national origin, or any other bias. The right of all persons to be treated equally and to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures will be respected.

This policy does not preclude officers from offering assistance to persons nor does it prohibit stopping someone suspected of a crime based upon observed actions and/or information received about a potential felony.

Joint Public Safety Center

The Joint Public Safety Center, located in the Mid Campus Center, is a partnership between WashU Medicine Protective Services, WashU Emergency Management, and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Public Safety. While previously operating independently and utilizing incompatible technology, these entities now work together to make the medical campus a safer place. The goal of the facility is to provide a quick and seamless response to a wide range of emergencies that affect the physical infrastructure of the campus or critical operations of the institution. To ensure seamless continuity of operations, the space is equipped with generators that can provide uninterrupted service in the event of a power outage. Co-locating and integrating the public-safety organizations within the Joint Public Safety Center strengthens each organization’s capabilities.
